After defeating Argentina on penalties, the assistant manager for the Brazilian team, Mario Zagallo, said that the champions of South America never gave up hope in reaching their objective. "Argentina came with their top team and we didn´t. We were deeply criticized, but we took top honors.", said the enthused 1994 World Cup winning coach.
For Zagallo, the Brazilian success story can be condensed in one sentence: "We never lost hope. This was important. During the match, we didn´t care about the difference in level between us and the Argentineans. We took to the pitch knowing that we´d face lots of hurdles, but we gave it our all, with grit and determination."
The title won against Argentina in the final of Copa America brought with it a special ingredient: "Winning is always important, but beating Argentina undoubtedly has a special flavour.", he added.
