The win in Copa America 2004 confirmed the bet made by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, who took a young team alongside several substitute players from the top Brazilian squad. The victory against Argentina in the shootout thrilled the Brazilian manager who glorified the resolve of his athletes, considered by Parreira the new generation of Brazilian football.

"We lost three players due to injury during the match, the likes of Kleberson, Alex and Luisão, and we conceded a goal in the dying minutes. With the talent of our players and the determination of each one, we managed to draw level and clinch the title. Nobody can take the five-time World Cup champions lightly. With poise and maturity, we secured top honours in memorable fashion.", said Parreira after the win.

According to the coach, the pranks by the Argentineans, especially Carlos Tevez, who started playing about with the ball in the decisives minutes were crucial. "They were ahead and began to run the clock down, but the players kept fooling around with the ball. That irritated the team and spurred us to do our best.", stated Parreira, who intends to use several of these players in the World Cup qualifiers.

"They´re all first-choice players in European clubs, but had to prove themselves with the national jersey. This was our goal, to increase the possibilities within our squad so we could mount a powerful and homogeneous group for the Qualifiers!", concluded the title-winning coach.
